Firstly, there's the field research.  Heading off into the wild to take sketches of prominent rock features, document the colours of the land and source inspiration. I like to make sense of the contour lines and geological structures from maps or textbooks to help me decide which parts make it into the final composition.
Although sometimes, it's nice to just sit and absorb the surroundings...

On my return to the studio I decide on the colour palette, make detailed drawings, cut the cloth into intricate shapes before finally getting down to the business of stitching.
