I’m excited to announce that my studio is relocating.
Almost four years ago I picked up the keys to this place.
Since 2013, I’ve been based here, in West Kilbride, North Ayrshire. This award-winning village has undergone an inspirational journey itself. Formerly run-down and a bit sad, the community rallied, creativity saved the place. Craft Town Scotland gave West Kilbride a new lease of life, and gave me an attractive studio and environment from which to begin my creative journey. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been afforded some amazing opportunities just by being part of this community of makers and shakers!
Of course, I’ll miss the regular chats with fellow artists, makers, locals and visitors. But the time has come for me to move on and allow the space for someone new to come into the Main Street and make their mark here.
Anyone who fancies learning more about opening a studio in West Kilbride should get in touch with Maggie Broadley, Director, Craft Town Scotland.
I’m moving my studio closer to home, to Paisley. I was born here, I live here, my kids go to school here, my family are here.
This is not an open studio, and therefore offers a quieter, more contemplative environment. Proximity to home, less time travelling and with a fresh view from the window, I anticipate a greater focus on developing my work and ideas. There will still be the opportunity to pay me a visit, only now you’ll need to give me a shout to book an appointment, I just hope I don’t get too lonely!
This new found freedom will allow me the opportunity to venture out into the landscape more often, apply for residencies, study, experiment with new techniques and generally be more proactive.
I have a lot of work on over the next few months, private commissions, corporate commissions and establishing the framework for a year-long project with Tighnabruaich Gallery.
In the immediate future, you’ll find me completing a few pieces and packing up Studio 117. If you would like to pay a final visit to the open studio, pop down to Main Street, West Kilbride on a Thursday Friday or Saturday over the next two weeks. My final day will be Saturday 20th May. With the new space being less of a gallery, I’ll be selling many of the fixtures and fittings from Studio 117, such as tables, classic chairs, vintage storage, crates and shelving.
Finally, thank you to West Kilbride for playing host to my early career and making me, and Sam, feel so welcome.
There are too many people to mention by name, but I’ll try to seek you out for a wee cuddle before we go.
